You save the cost of buying two head gaskets and a spacer plate. Metal gaskets are known for their very long service life.

When converting to a turbocharger or supercharger, the compression ratio must be reduced. This can be achieved with special pistons or a spacer plate. This allows significantly higher boost pressures and power outputs. Under forced induction, the original pistons would not withstand the resulting temperatures at standard compression ratios.
